Nurturing the Lunch Nap

The morning nap is usually the first nap to fall into place naturally for your baby and also for those babies that are in the middle of Sleep Training. Why is this?

It’s quite simple. Our baby’s sleep is governed by a number of patterns. Firstly, their Homeostatic Sleep Drive – that is, their need for sleep, based on how long they’ve been awake for, will encourage your baby to fall asleep again. Secondly, they’ve just woken up from a 12hour sleep (albeit broken by feeds) and their bodies have had time to recharge, a well rested baby is more likely to settle and sleep well = Sleep begets sleep. Thirdly, they haven't experienced a build up of overstimulation and overtiredness from a long day. These factors all contribute to your little one being more settled and ready for their morning nap. If you’re wondering why the morning nap works so well, but the lunch nap is a mess – the above reasons may shed a little light on your situation for you. A few more important factors to take into consideration when troubleshooting your little one’s lunch nap are: - Are they having too much awake time? - Are they having too little awake time? - Are they taking a decent feed (breast/bottle/solids) during their awake time? - Is your morning nap too long? (More than 1hr+ for babies over 4mths) - Are they having too much fruit for lunch and that’s creating a nap-poop? Ask yourself these questions and see if you can get that lunch nap happening. If you’re struggling with it, book in a call and let’s talk it through. So how old was your baby when their morning nap consolidated?
